Our Story
In 1990 Boris Kosukhin, the founder of the company, immigrated from St. Petersburg, Russia to the US. In 2000, ten years later, he traveled back to Russia for the first time since he left it. During his visit to the motherland he heard a balalaika performance by Folk Ensemble in the city of Kostroma. Having fallen in love with the instrument and its music he decided to learn how to play balalayka on return  to the US. Back in the US he realized it was not easy to buy a real Russian balalajka in America. During his next few trips to Russia, he acquired few balalaikas but he wanted to make a real Russian balalaika easily available in America, where instrument’s popularity has recently grown. He decided to found a company that would sell balalaikas in America. In 2006, Imperskaya Music was born, the only company in the US that manufactures, imports and sells balalaikas and their accessories. "Imperskaya" is the Russian word for "Imperial" spelled with the English letters. We decided to name our company "Imperskaya Music" after The Imperial Balalaika Orchestra, the first balalaika orchestra that was founded by Vasili Andreev, nobleman and musician, famous for reviving and promoting balalaika and its music.
